Copycat protection for App Store

App Store clone detection: find and report copycat apps

Last reviewed

The short answer

To report a copycat app on the App Store, the rights owner uses Apple's App Store Content Dispute route, identifying the app, the rights it infringes and what's copied: name, icon, screenshots or description. Apple shares the complaint with the developer. Apple's App Review Guidelines also prohibit copycat apps.

If your app does well, clones follow: the same pitch, recoloured screenshots, a description run through a rewriter, and a name one or two letters away from yours. Some clones also stuff your app's name into their listing to steal your searches.

Apple accepts disputes from rights owners, and clear side-by-side evidence makes them much more effective.

What App Store copycats look like

  • An app name one or two letters from yours, or yours with "Pro" or "Lite" added.
  • Your screenshots recoloured or with the captions copied.
  • Your App Store description reworded sentence by sentence.
  • An icon in your colours and shape.
  • Your app's name used in the listing to appear in your searches.

How to report a copycat on App Store

  1. 1

    Capture both listings

Screenshot your listing and the copy side by side: name, icon, screenshots and description, with dates.

  2. 2

    Identify your rights

Copyright in your screenshots, artwork and text; a trade mark or goodwill in your app's name.

  3. 3

    Submit a content dispute

Use Apple's App Store Content Dispute route, choosing the type of infringement and including the evidence.

  4. 4

    Expect developer contact

Apple shares the complaint with the other developer, who may respond. Keep your own records of dates and evidence.

How Infringement Ninja helps on App Store

App Store monitoring is live. We search the App Store for your name, aliases and the phrases a copycat would target, compare lookalike apps' icons, screenshots and descriptions with your own app's, and flag apps that use your name in their listing.

Each alert lists what looks copied and drafts the App Store complaint text for you to review and submit.

App Store copycats: common questions

Can Apple remove a copycat app?

Apple can act on content disputes from rights owners and enforces its App Review Guidelines, which prohibit copycat apps. Outcomes depend on the evidence.

Is copying my app's features infringement?

Ideas and features alone usually aren't protected. Copied screenshots, artwork, text and a confusingly similar name are where your rights are strongest.

How do I find clones of my app early?

Search the App Store regularly for your name and key phrases, or let monitoring do it and compare each result with your listing.
