Copycat protection for eBay
eBay copycats and counterfeits: how to report them through VeRO
Last reviewed
The short answer
eBay handles intellectual property complaints through its Verified Rights Owner (VeRO) programme: the rights owner or their agent reports listings that infringe their trade mark, copyright or design, and eBay removes them. Collect listing numbers, screenshots and proof of your rights before reporting.
eBay copies tend to be counterfeits using your brand name, listings that reuse your product photos, or knock-offs described as "style" or "inspired by" your product.
eBay's VeRO programme exists for exactly this. It's built for rights owners and their agents, and works best when reports are specific and backed by evidence.
What eBay copycats look like
- Counterfeits listed under your brand name.
- Your product photos reused by other sellers.
- Titles using your brand as a description ("style", "type", "compatible").
- Your packaging or logo reproduced on knock-offs.
- Bulk listings from overseas sellers using your product descriptions.
How to report a copycat on eBay
- 1
Collect evidence
Record the item numbers, seller IDs and screenshots, plus your trade mark registration or proof of copyright.
- 2
Use VeRO
Rights owners report through eBay's VeRO programme. Check eBay's current VeRO pages for how to submit a notice and what it must contain.
- 3
Be specific
State which right is infringed and how for each listing. Vague or blanket reports are slower.
- 4
Keep a log
Track every report and outcome; repeat infringers are easier to deal with when you can show a pattern.
How Infringement Ninja helps on eBay
Our open-web search looks for marketplace listings using your name or copying your products, and listing checks read a product page from a link and explain whose rights it may break.
Alerts draft a cease and desist letter for sellers who need one, and trade mark watching catches conflicting UK applications while you can still oppose them.
eBay copycats: common questions
Who can use eBay's VeRO programme?
Rights owners and their authorised agents. If someone else's brand is being copied, you can't report it through VeRO, but you can let the owner know.
Is using my brand name with "compatible with" infringement?
Not always: honest descriptions of compatibility can be allowed. Using your brand to suggest the product is yours, or in a way that takes unfair advantage, is more likely to infringe.
Do I need a registered trade mark?
For copied photos or text, no: copyright applies automatically. For brand-name misuse, a registration makes the report far more straightforward.
