Etsy copycat protection: find and report copies of your shop

Last reviewed

The short answer

If an Etsy seller copies your design, photos or shop name, the rights owner (or their authorised agent) can file an intellectual property report with Etsy identifying the right, the listing and how it infringes. Etsy reviews it and usually removes the listing and tells the seller. Collect evidence first: dated originals, screenshots and listing links.

Etsy copycats are rarely subtle. A bestselling print turns up in another shop with your photos, a near-identical title and your shop name in the tags. With AI image and text tools, a copy can be live within hours of yours selling well, often priced to undercut you.

The good news is that Etsy has a working process for rights owners, and most copies come down when the report is clear. The hard part is finding them early and writing the report well.

What Etsy copycats look like

  • Your product photos reused, cropped or recoloured on another listing.
  • Your shop name, split or misspelt ("Fern Hollow" for "Fernhollow"), used in titles or tags to catch searches for you.
  • Your listing title and description copied word for word or lightly reworded.
  • Your artwork redrawn or regenerated with AI and sold as a print, sticker or digital download.
  • A cheaper version of your product with your bestseller's exact set of tags.

How to report a copycat on Etsy

  1. 1

    Collect evidence

Save the copy's listing URL, screenshots of it and its shop, and your dated originals: source files, first-published listing, photo metadata.

  2. 2

    Identify your right

Copyright covers your original photos, artwork and text automatically. A registered UK trade mark, or goodwill in your shop name, covers the name.

  3. 3

    File Etsy's IP report

Use Etsy's intellectual property infringement report (found from its Intellectual Property Policy page). Only the rights owner or their authorised agent can file it.

  4. 4

    Include the statements

Etsy asks for a good-faith statement that the use isn't authorised and a statement that the report is accurate. Be specific about what's copied.

  5. 5

    Follow up

Etsy notifies the seller and usually removes the listing. If the same shop keeps copying, report each listing and consider a cease and desist letter.

How Infringement Ninja helps on Etsy

Paste an Etsy listing link into a listing check and we read the title, shop and description, then tell you whose rights it may break and who can report it. It works for your own listing before you publish, or for a copy you've spotted.

When a copy uses your brand, an alert drafts the text for Etsy's IP report from the evidence, ready for you to review and file. Our open-web search already picks up marketplace listings that use your name; direct Etsy monitoring is coming soon.

Etsy copycats: common questions

Can I report an Etsy listing that copies someone else's work?

Not through Etsy's IP report, which is for the rights owner or their agent. You can use "Report this item" for counterfeits or policy breaches, or let the owner know.

Do I need a registered trade mark to report an Etsy copycat?

Not for copied photos, artwork or text: copyright applies automatically. For your shop or brand name, a registered trade mark makes the report much stronger.

Will the seller know I reported them?

Usually, yes. Etsy tells the seller about the report, and IP reports generally include the reporter's contact details so the seller can respond.

How do I stop my own Etsy listings being removed?

Avoid other brands' names in titles and tags, including "style", "inspired by" and "dupe". A listing check flags these before you publish.
